Social Studies Reflection

Final Reflection
Social studies is an exceptional subject. The purpose of the content is to help students develop a social understanding. Teachers must expose their students to social studies to help them become effective citizens. Without the studies, students are not aware of their geographic surroundings, history, or civic efficacy.
This semester, Several K-2nd teachers reported that they did not have time to implement social studies into their daily lesson. I find that hard to believe that any teacher is not able implement social studies into a daily lesson. Teachers can easily integrate social studies into other subjects. For example, students could learn and write a description on a specific the geographic location. However, I think those teachers did not feel obligated to teach social studies because their students are not required to take a social studies standardized test. If a student does not learn any information from the social studies content, then they will have some delays or lack social studies knowledge. Teachers are the number one variable of why students like or dislike any subject.  There are several ways teachers can make social studies a likable subject.
When teaching social studies, teachers must be creative and utilize their resources. Creative teachers allow students to explore different aspects of social studies. Exploring different aspects of social studies allows the classroom to be student center. Some students need to take advantage of their learning in order to learn or retain information. If a classroom is teacher centered, then the classroom revolves around the teacher’s needs and wants verses the student’s needs. Another way of teachers being creative is implementing great hands-on and instructional activities in the classroom. Hands-on activities accommodate visual and kinesthetic learners.  Reader’s theatre or constructing a map out of play dough are two great hands-on activities. Students will benefit from activities that accommodate their learning style. Also if teachers need help creating social studies lesson, they can search websites that provide social studies lesson plans or activities.
Teachers should align their curriculum and state standards to the learning objectives to social studies standards. Implementing the state standards and curriculum can and will prepare students for standardized test. However, teachers must make sure that they do not only focus on standardized test. Focusing on standardized test can sometimes eliminate the purpose of a subject.
My social studies method course was a great representation of an ideal modern day social studies classroom. I learned great strategies and K-6 social studies content knowledge. The course work and activities enlighten my perspective on social studies. In grade school, my social studies class was boring and long.  Before taking this course, I disliked social studies and thought it was pointless. My instructor taught my classmates and I how to teach social studies to benefit students learning style.
In the future, I plan to implement social studies in my daily lesson. I will utilize different instructional strategies to captivate my student’s interest. I would like for my students to love social studies as well as values its’ purpose. If students do not understand the purpose of social studies, then I have failed as a teacher. I want my students to realize the significance of social studies.

Why is social studies the forgotten subject!

In present time,  some teacher do not value the purpose of social studies. The social studies content shapes our past, present, and future society. Social studies also explores history and geographic aspects of the world. Students must obtain knowledge on history and geography in order to function in the effective society. Social studies can be integrated in all subjects at all grade levels. Teachers must use creative activities and different instructions to teach social stuides. Social studies should always be implemented in daily lessons.

Living History Museum

Today in my social studies course we did living history museum. living history museum is where people depict historical figures. This a great activity for  the classroom. Students can dress in a costume and use props to depict their historical figures. I depicted Marva Collins she was one of the first African-American woman to open her own school. She has received great recognition and has made great contributions to her students' lives. I really had fun with activity and I hope one day to do this in my classroom.

Thanksgiving!~

My class where I am conducted my observations hours was discussed the purpose of Thanksgiving on Tuesday. I thought about how my social studies course duscussed the worlds' perspective of Thanksgiving. Some people do not know that the pilgrims took over the Indians' land. Teachers must watch how they voice their opinions on specific beliefs or holidays. A teacher's opinion may offend a student or a faculty member.Thanksgiving is a day I give thanks to people!

Social Studies!

This past week in Social Studies, we focused on how readers make different connections with text. I read the Votes For Women reading booklet. The Women's suffrage is an important historical event. After reading the passage, I felt proud to be a woman. The Women suffrage reminded me of the Civil Rights movement and the Holocaust. The leaders and followers of the Women's suffrage fought for their rights and endured alot of pain from opposers.

Story Path

In social studies we did a story path. It was so much fun!! Story path is creating visualization to represent the setting and the characters of a story. Along with the visualization, students are asked to analyze the story's setting and characters. We created a story path on Mt. Everest. I was a travel agent who provided mountain climbers  information on Mt. Everest. A story path is a great activity to help students make connection with a story.

Mt. Everest

Yesterday, I learned some much information on Mt. Everest. I can't believe that it cost 25,000 dollars to do an expedition on Mt. Everest. I love the mountains, but I would not ever want to climb one. I am not a nature person and I hate cold weather. However, people who go on this expedition have a lot of courage. Climbing Mt. Everest can be really risky and dangerous. My prays go out to people who are take on this expedition.

Social Studies-Book reading!

For the last couple of weeks, I have been reading  Letters From Rifka. This is a great book about the Jewish culture. The main character Rifka writes letters to her Jewish cousin about her journey  friom Russia to  America. I think this book is great for teenagers. Teenagers could really relate to the feelings of  the main character.

Geocash!!!!

Two weeks ago my Social Studies course did  Geocash as a class  activity. Geocash is a great discover learning activity for all ages. When students participate in discovery learning, they utilize their high order thinking skills. Students are able to connect different information and skills together. Geocash reminded me of a scavenger hunt, but with with technology devices.

Photo diary

Last week in Social Studies we did a photo diary. The photo diary is a fun activity that can used in all grade levels. The objective of the project was to take  pictures of different objects and  connect the objects with Social Studies. This is a great hands on activity that will serve several students' interest. The photo diary will and can require students to use their imagination and connect simple objects with a content.

Social Studies!

Last week in Social Studies we did reader's theatre. My group acted out the Boston Tea Party scene. I had one role in the entire scene. Doing reader's theatre reminded me of theatre in middle and high school. Reader's theatre is an great activity to use in a Social Studies class for all grade levels. Students have the chance to interactive with their peers as well as the acting scene.

Social Studies!

This past week, I read a great article on teachers having a critical voice. A critical voice expresses a person’s beliefs and values. Some people do not use their critical voice because they are afraid it may cause a dispute. However, sometimes people who use their critical voice can or will gain respect from their peers and employees. Teacher's critical voice can bring change and improvement to their school's environment. As an educator, I will always express my critical voice.
